…FCT Journalists Renew Call for ‘Journalists’ Village’ to Ease Accommodation Burden

Nigerian workers have once again called for urgent government intervention to improve access to decent and affordable housing, as they marked the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration at the Eagles Square in Abuja.

Dressed in vibrant, radiant colours, workers from various sectors spoke to Housing TV Africa correspondent, highlighting their key demands and aspirations.

The President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhaji Yahya Alhassan, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate workers and acknowledged the resilience of Nigerian labourers over the years. He urged the government to prioritise workers’ remuneration, stressing that improved welfare would enhance productivity, commitment, and service delivery.

Alhassan, who disclosed that he owns his own home, commended mortgage banks for their support in helping civil servants become homeowners. He encouraged workers to embrace the Renewed Hope Housing Programme of the current administration and called on the government to intensify efforts to address Nigeria’s housing deficit.

Also speaking, Karim Olawale, Unit Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants at the African Union Development Agency, urged the government to provide affordable and decent housing for civil servants. He lamented that long commutes due to unaffordable housing options diminish productivity.

“Imagine a civil servant who cannot afford rent in town but works at the Secretariat. He comes all the way from Keffi. By the time he arrives, he’s already tired. He takes time to settle in, and by 4:00 p.m., he’s already leaving. It’s not encouraging at all,” Olawale noted.

The Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Chapter, Comrade Grace Ike, expressed excitement over the strong turnout of journalists at the May Day celebration. She praised the contributions of workers to Nigeria’s development and appealed to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, to support media professionals by establishing a Journalists’ Village to help ease their accommodation challenges.

Meanwhile, a local entrepreneur showcased his line of innovative electric and hybrid vehicles powered by CNG and petrol. He described them as sustainable alternatives to traditional petrol vehicles and aligned his efforts with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises cleaner and more accessible transportation solutions.
