Nigeria and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) have deepened their partnership to promote energy efficiency and sustainable housing, under the Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB) initiative.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, announced that Nigeria has been selected as a key partner under the PEEB programme—an initiative supported by GIZ that builds on the successes of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in the building sector.

Speaking during a meeting with a GIZ delegation led by Dr. Karin Jansen, Dangiwa expressed strong alignment between PEEB’s objectives and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, which aims to deliver climate-resilient and energy-efficient communities across the country.

“Our vision is to mainstream green building practices and embed sustainability into every layer of housing development,” Dangiwa said, noting plans to incorporate green mortgage models within the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) to scale up affordable, energy-efficient housing.

The minister highlighted the need to revise the National Building Code, create building materials manufacturing hubs, and upgrade the National Urban Renewal Programme to embed resilience and climate-smart design in slum redevelopment efforts.

Dangiwa also announced collaborations with platforms like IFC EDGE for training ministry staff, developers, and project managers in sustainable building standards.

GIZ Country Director Markus Wagner reaffirmed Germany’s long-standing cooperation with Nigeria, rooted in a 1974 bilateral agreement and expanded in 2008 through the German-Nigeria Energy Partnership. He emphasised GIZ’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy transition through advisory services, investment promotion, and sustainable practices.

Wagner revealed that GIZ will support the Ministry with technical assistance, energy audits, and access to climate finance, including opportunities from the Green Climate Fund and Adaptation Fund. He invited Dangiwa to the launch of the PEEB Cool Enabling Facility in Nigeria on June 10, 2025, and previewed upcoming energy efficiency projects across healthcare and public infrastructure.

The partnership signals a strong step forward in institutionalising green architecture, increasing climate resilience, and improving access to affordable, sustainable housing for Nigerians.
