A severe rainstorm in the Alagbole-Akute area of Ogun State led to the collapse of a telecommunications mast on Tuesday, damaging a residential building in Unity Estate and leaving the landlord with minor injuries.
The incident, which occurred during a heavy downpour, caused part of the house to cave in. Fortunately, the occupant—who was inside the home at the time—survived the ordeal and was treated by medical personnel. He is currently reported to be in stable condition.
According to a statement released by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, the command received an emergency report around 2:39 p.m. on Tuesday from a local resident, Mr. Moses Olalere, who witnessed the event.
“The mast, identified as property of IHS Company, collapsed due to the intensity of the storm and landed on the building, causing significant structural damage,” Odutola stated.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, has directed all area commanders to begin immediate engagement with telecom companies whose masts are located near residential neighborhoods. The aim, he said, is to assess structural safety and prevent future occurrences.
The police also confirmed that an investigation has begun to determine the precise cause of the mast failure, and further updates will be shared with the public as more information becomes available.
Authorities have urged residents to report signs of compromised infrastructure—especially during the rainy season—so that precautionary measures can be swiftly taken to safeguard lives and property.
