The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has commenced construction of its long-awaited permanent secretariat in Abuja, marking a major milestone in the country’s sports infrastructure development.
The initiative follows the allocation of a 5-hectare plot by the Federal Government and is aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of the NOC ahead of key international sporting events.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 11, 2025, near Aviation Village in the Federal Capital Territory, during a board meeting attended by top officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC), including its Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olapade. NOC President Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, alongside members of the Executive Committee and Board, led the delegation to the project site.
Designed as a multi-phase project, the permanent secretariat will feature modern office spaces and serve as a national hub for Olympic-related planning, training, and development. The facility will also include world-class sports training amenities to benefit federations affiliated with the NOC.
“This development is not just about a building — it’s about creating a central space to drive our Olympic vision, empower our athletes, and streamline the work of the NOC,” said Engr. Gumel during the inspection.
The project, once completed, will host capacity-building events such as training camps, workshops, and seminars to better prepare Nigerian athletes for global competitions like the Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games. Plans include up to five floors of office and functional space tailored to the needs of Nigeria’s evolving sports sector.
Also on the board meeting’s agenda were critical updates on the OlympAfrica Centre in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, the National Federation elections, and preparations for upcoming international events. These include:
African Schools Sports Games in Algeria (July 25 – August 5, 2025)
Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia (November 17 – 21, 2025)
The NOC expressed optimism that this permanent facility will serve as a cornerstone for Nigeria’s long-term sports growth, offering a centralised and professional environment for administration and athlete development.
This project signals a renewed national commitment to sports excellence, positioning Nigeria for stronger representation and performance on the global Olympic stage.
