The Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan welcomed its first aircraft on Wednesday, six months after it was closed for an extensive upgrade aimed at bringing the facility up to international standards.

The flight, which landed at 9:14 a.m., was part of the advance preparations for President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Oyo State on Friday for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

According to a statement signed by Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, the successful landing of the aircraft demonstrates the airport’s renewed capacity to safely and efficiently accommodate high-profile flights.

“With the presidential aircraft expected shortly, this marks a significant milestone for the airport and sets the tone for its future operations,” Olanrewaju noted.

Governor Makinde had flagged off the airport upgrade project in September 2024, emphasizing that the modernization would position Oyo State as a gateway to global markets. He said the enhanced facility would improve connectivity, strengthen business and leisure travel, and drive long-term economic growth.

The upgrade also included the renovation of the VIP lounge, installation of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility, and the acquisition of a modern fire truck to enhance safety.

The reopening of the airport is expected to boost regional air traffic and support Oyo State’s broader vision of economic expansion through improved infrastructure.
