The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), FCT chapter, has called for a return to the original Abuja Master Plan, blaming illegal developments and poor planning for the city’s growing urban challenges.
Speaking during the joint commemoration of World Habitat Day and World Cities Day in Abuja, NITP Chairperson Tpl. Queen Phillips said the capital is facing “urban sprawl, flooding, and housing in unsafe zones” due to disregard for planning layouts.
“The FCT master plan was well designed. All we’re saying is, let’s follow the zoning. And if changes are needed, let’s consult the professionals,” she said.
Phillips disclosed that the Institute has written to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike seeking an audience.
“We appreciate his infrastructure work, but we must complement it with proper planning to prevent flooding and displacement,” she added.
Former NITP President Tpl. Nathaniel Atebije warned that ignoring planning principles could worsen the crisis.
“We must either embrace planning or perish,” he said.
The event ended with a friendly football match symbolising collaboration between planners and youth groups.
