The Rivers State House of Assembly has halted impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The decision was reached during Thursday’s plenary session in Port Harcourt, where lawmakers resolved to suspend further action on the impeachment notice earlier served on the state’s top executive officials.

The Assembly had initiated the impeachment move at its first sitting of 2026, accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct. Key allegations included the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex and the approval of state expenditures without legislative approval.

As part of the constitutional process, the lawmakers had formally written to the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, requesting the constitution of a seven-member investigative panel to examine the allegations.

However, the Chief Judge declined to set up the panel, citing an existing court injunction restraining further action on the impeachment procedure.

With the latest development, the impeachment process has been put on hold pending further political consultations and legal clarity. The suspension is expected to ease tensions in the state’s ongoing political crisis, at least temporarily, as stakeholders continue dialogue aimed at resolving the dispute.
