Abuja–Kaduna Train Incident Leaves Passengers Injured as NRC, NSIB Launch Investigation

Several passengers sustained injuries on Monday morning after a train operating on the experienced an operational incident during its journey.

Passengers onboard said they heard a loud bang before the train suddenly jolted, throwing some people off their seats and causing panic among those on board.

The (NRC) confirmed the occurrence, stating that it happened around 10:30 a.m. near Asham along the rail line.

Coupling fault triggered incident

According to the Managing Director of the corporation, , preliminary findings indicated that the incident was linked to a mechanical issue involving the coupling system connecting the locomotive to the train.

He explained that the rear locomotive made contact with the passenger coach behind it after a problem developed with the coupling mechanism.

The NRC said some passengers sustained injuries during the incident and were immediately attended to before being transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Authorities, however, confirmed that no deaths were recorded.

Emergency response activated

Following the incident, emergency response protocols were immediately activated while technical teams were dispatched to the scene to manage the situation and assist passengers.

The rail corporation reassured the public that safety remains its top priority and that necessary steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence.

Safety bureau begins investigation

Meanwhile, the (NSIB) has commenced a detailed investigation into the incident.

In a preliminary report issued by the bureau’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, , the train—identified as KA2—departed from in for its scheduled trip to in .

The train arrived at Jere Station at about 8:52 a.m. before continuing its journey at 8:59 a.m. after a rear locomotive was attached for additional operational support.

Shortly after departure, the rear locomotive reportedly detached while the train was moving along a downward section toward Asham.

Officials said the detached locomotive rolled forward and collided with the rear section of the train, resulting in what investigators described as a serious operational occurrence.

Over 400 passengers onboard

Authorities disclosed that the train was carrying 429 passengers, along with 46 crew members and 24 security personnel at the time of the incident.

Despite the injuries recorded, officials confirmed that all passengers survived the incident.

Investigators from the NSIB are currently examining technical and operational factors surrounding the event as authorities work to ensure improved safety across Nigeria’s railway system.
