President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Professor Segun Aina, as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Professor Aina will succeed the outgoing registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose second tenure is expected to end on July 31, 2026.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who said the President expects the new appointee to build on the achievements recorded by the outgoing administration at the examination body.

According to the Presidency, Aina is an accomplished academic and systems expert with extensive experience in digital infrastructure, examination systems, and public-sector institutional reforms.

The statement noted that President Tinubu expects him to deploy his expertise and practical experience toward advancing JAMB’s operations and strengthening its reform initiatives.

It added that Aina, who will turn 40 in July, became one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of Computer Engineering at the age of 39 and is now set to become the youngest Registrar in JAMB’s history.

The new registrar holds a degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, alongside postgraduate degrees in Internet Computing, Network Security, and Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University.

He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

According to the Presidency, Aina’s connection with JAMB dates back to his National Youth Service period, where he gained early experience in admissions administration and data-driven institutional systems.

The statement said his exposure during that period contributed to his ongoing work in examination reforms and systems optimisation.

With more than 15 years of post-graduation experience, Aina has worked at the intersection of technology, governance, and institutional reform, advising federal and state governments on digital systems and operational transformation.

He has also served as a consultant to examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), providing expertise in ICT systems, examination integrity, and digital process improvements.

Aina is a member of several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

His appointment comes at a period of ongoing reforms within JAMB, as the board recently retained its minimum admission thresholds for the 2026 admission cycle while introducing policy adjustments scheduled to take effect from 2027.

Under the current framework, universities and Colleges of Nursing Sciences will continue to admit candidates from a minimum score of 150, while polytechnics retain a cut-off mark of 100.

JAMB also announced that from 2027, candidates seeking admission into Colleges of Education for education and non-engineering agriculture programmes would be exempted from writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), a move that has generated debate among stakeholders in the education sector.
