Nigerians were left in darkness as the nation’s power grid experienced another collapse in the early hours of Monday, April 15, 2024.

Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org) showed that between 2:00 am and the time of filing the report, the grid recorded zero Megawatts (MW) and was only able to generate a meagre 52.3MW around 7:10 am the same day.

The blackout had far-reaching consequences nationwide, as electricity distribution companies (DisCos) struggled to cope with the sudden and prolonged outage. Many parts of the country experienced over five hours of darkness as the grid struggled to recover.

This collapse, the fifth in 2024, adds to the longstanding challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector. In a year already marked by disruptions, this incident stands out as one of the most severe, exacerbating the struggles of consumers and industry stakeholders.

Despite the widespread impact, neither the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) nor the DisCos have issued an official statement regarding the cause and resolution of the crisis. As of the time of filing this report, the TCN had not confirmed the occurrence, leaving the public and stakeholders in the dark about the source and resolution of the newest crisis.
