Blackout in FCT as vandals destroy 330kV transmission line

Again, vandals have destroyed Tower 70 along the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) 330kV Gwagwalada -Katampe Transmission line causing blackouts within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs.

The incident which happened at 11:32 pm on Monday had led to reduced bulk power supply flexibility and the volume of power into Abuja by 250MW.

The TCN Spokesperson, Mrs Ndidi Mba who made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday said its Operators had conducted a trial reclosure but which failed.

“The TCN lines and patrol team discovered that the four (4) tower footings of Tower 70 were vandalised, destroying the tower legs and causing the tower to stand on the ground, supported by conductors,” the statement partly reads.

However, it said:” TCN has mobilized to the site of the incident and has commenced an emergency repair of the damaged tower and its associated equipment.”

To this end, the company reiterated the need for vigilance in the fight against vandalism of power equipment.

“It is important that we report suspicious movements around all power equipment to security operatives or to the nearest TCN offices nationwide,” it added.
