Council and Firm Team Up to Fast-Track Eco-Friendly Building Standards

In a major push for sustainable development, the Green Building Council Nigeria (GBCN) has partnered with global sustainability firm Sintali to accelerate the adoption of EDGE green building certification across the country.

As Nigeria’s construction industry continues to expand rapidly, concerns over environmental impact are growing. Many new buildings still overlook energy efficiency, water conservation, and carbon footprint reduction. This partnership aims to change that by promoting green design practices that are practical, measurable, and globally recognized.

EDGE, which stands for Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies, is a tool that helps builders design resource-efficient structures. It offers a clear path for reducing energy and water use, cutting operational costs, and shrinking a building’s overall environmental impact.

Speaking at the signing of the agreement, Sintali Co-Founder Eleni Polychroniadou described Nigeria as a key player in Africa’s green future. She emphasized the need to empower local markets with the right tools and knowledge to transition toward sustainable development.

GBCN President Danjuma Waniko called the deal a critical milestone, noting that combining Sintali’s global certification expertise with Nigeria’s local insights would help scale green building efforts nationwide. According to him, the goal is to make sustainable design both accessible and standard across the country’s growing cities.

With this partnership in place, Nigeria is setting a bold example for how fast-growing economies can embrace environmentally responsible construction without slowing down progress.
