The Labour Party has announced plans to expel its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his involvement in a new political alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) banner ahead of the 2027 elections.
Party leadership disclosed that Obi’s continued engagement with the ADC-led coalition amounts to anti-party activity and a breach of the party’s constitution, especially as it relates to dual party allegiance.
According to party officials, an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will be convened to formally recommend Obi’s expulsion, which will be ratified during the upcoming party convention.
The move follows Obi’s participation in a broad opposition coalition aiming to unseat the ruling party in the next general elections. The alliance, which has adopted the ADC as its official platform, includes several prominent political figures.
Party leaders have described Obi’s alignment with the coalition as a clear departure from the Labour Party’s ideology and structure, stating that membership in two parties simultaneously is unconstitutional.
Obi was previously suspended for similar infractions, but party officials say the latest development leaves no room for ambiguity, and full expulsion is now inevitable.
