The Oyo State Government has confirmed that no injuries or fatalities occurred following a recent geological disturbance at Iyamopo Hill in Igbeti, Olorunsogo Local Government Area.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, explained that the rock movement and mild tremor observed at the hill were the result of natural geological processes rather than any human-induced activity.
According to the commissioner, the phenomenon was caused by prolonged heat exposure during the dry season, followed by a rapid cooling period. This temperature fluctuation led to physical weathering—causing the rock surface to expand, crack, and shift.
He assured the public that, despite the alarming nature of the incident, there were no reported casualties or structural damage beyond the rock formation itself.
To better understand the situation and ensure safety going forward, the state has deployed a technical team from the Oyo State Solid Mineral Development Agency, led by Director General Biodun Oni, to conduct a field inspection. In addition, geoscience experts from the University of Ibadan are partnering with the government to conduct a detailed geological assessment.
As a precaution, residents in the immediate vicinity of the hill have been advised to temporarily relocate while studies continue.
“The safety of our residents remains paramount,” Oyelade emphasized. “We urge everyone to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing assessments. Updates will be provided as we receive more information.”
The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and is closely monitoring the situation to ensure proactive response measures are in place should further developments occur.
