The Katsina and Plateau state governments have ordered the closure of schools following rising banditry attacks on educational institutions in parts of the country.

Yusuf Jibia, commissioner for basic and secondary education in Katsina, announced the closure of schools in the state on Friday while addressing journalists.

Jibia said the decision was taken to safeguard students and teachers as security agencies implement a new statewide school safety strategy

The Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB) has ordered the immediate closure of all junior and senior secondary schools across the state following rising security concerns.

The board described the directive as a proactive safety measure to protect students from potential threats, noting that recent attacks on schools in Kebbi and Niger States have heightened fears among parents and education authorities.

According to a statement issued by the board and confirmed by its Public Relations Officer, Rechard John Samanja, the shutdown affects all public schools, including Government Junior Model Secondary Schools, primary schools, and day schools.

PSUBEB said Government Junior Model Secondary Schools will close from Saturday, November 22, 2025, while primary and day schools will shut down from Monday, November 24, 2025.

The statement said the decision underscores the need for preventive action to safeguard learners. Parents, guardians, school heads, and community leaders were urged to comply fully with the directive and remain vigilant until the situation improves.

The board assured the public that the closure is temporary, adding that the safety and wellbeing of students remains the state government’s priority.
