In a decisive move to enhance safety and restore order around Nigeria’s critical port infrastructure, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and security agencies, has commenced a major clean-up and sensitisation campaign around the Lagos port corridors.

The operation, titled “NPA Security Clearance Operations 2025,” is a three-day initiative aimed at addressing persistent challenges such as congestion, illegal structures, environmental degradation, and security threats along the Tin Can Island Complex, Lagos Port Complex, and the Kirikiri Lighter Terminals I & II.

The exercise is focused on removing unauthorized structures, abandoned equipment, and individuals engaging in unregulated activities that have long posed risks to port operations and public safety. Authorities say the operation aligns with international standards outlined by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), particularly the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, which emphasizes safe and secure port environments.

Speaking during the launch, the NPA’s Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho—represented by the General Manager of Security, Mr. Anthony Edosomwan—stressed the importance of protecting the port access roads, which he described as vital economic corridors.

“Our port access routes are gateways to national commerce. This joint operation is necessary to ensure security, improve traffic flow, and create a more efficient environment for logistics and trade,” he said.

The NPA noted that delays and operational inefficiencies caused by the poor state of port corridors have had a measurable impact on trade and the economy. The agency hopes this effort will boost investor confidence and contribute to national economic growth.

In preparation for the clean-up, NPA’s security division had conducted awareness campaigns to educate nearby communities and port users about the operation’s importance, aiming to foster cooperation and reduce resistance.

Dr. Dantsoho reaffirmed the NPA’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and operational excellence across Nigeria’s ports, emphasizing that this initiative is one of several aimed at transforming the nation’s maritime landscape.

The NPA is encouraging all stakeholders, including traders, transporters, and residents, to support the initiative in the interest of public safety and national economic development.
