A devastating flood has displaced more than 500 households in the Kigo Road Extension area of Kaduna North Local Government, leaving residents stranded and counting their losses. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, forced families to flee their homes with little to nothing.
One of the victims, Mrs. Khadijatu Jatau, a mother of nine, said she narrowly escaped with her children.
“Flood entered my house around 12 a.m. on Friday. I could only pick my phone and carry my children. Since then, I have been sleeping outside with them. We don’t have money for a hotel, and we have not eaten since morning.”
Many women and children now sleep outdoors, vulnerable to the elements and other dangers.
Mr. Bankole Sunday described the situation as “pathetic,” noting not only displacement but also rising security concerns. He revealed that thieves have been targeting deserted homes at night and that many families struggle to find food. He added that two women swept away by floodwaters were rescued alive.
Another resident, Mrs. Benedict Anyanwu, said she lost property worth millions of naira, lamenting that she was unable to salvage anything when the water invaded her home.
The victims are appealing to government authorities and humanitarian organisations for urgent relief, shelter, and security support as they battle the aftermath of the disaster.
