The Kaduna State Government has approved a capital investment of over ₦2.8 billion to comprehensively remodel, modernize, and equip the Gambo Sawaba General Hospital located in Zaria. This major infrastructure development reflects the ongoing state policy to revitalize public healthcare delivery and broaden access to premium medical services for regional populations. According to an official statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Ibraheem Musa, construction crews have already mobilized to the site, with physical structural engineering and site preparation starting roughly two weeks ago.

This financial commitment to the Zaria-based facility forms a key part of a broader, statewide health sector master plan aimed at upgrading 16 secondary health facilities across the 23 local government areas of the state. Alongside these ongoing secondary facility overhauls, the state administration recently finalized and opened an advanced 300-bed hospital complex in Millennium City and elevated 255 foundational primary healthcare centers to advanced Level 2 operational status.

Six alternative general hospitals under this strategic initiative have already reached complete structural and operational handover. These completed facilities span key demographic zones including Sabon Tasha, Kachia, Saminaka, Kawo, Makarfi, and the Limi General Hospital situated within the Sabon Gari local government jurisdiction. The ongoing upgrade at Gambo Sawaba General Hospital is expected to significantly reduce pressure on federal tertiary referral centers while directly boosting medical outcomes and structural capacity across northern Nigeria.
