Architects Must Build with Purpose, Not Just Concrete Ejiwunmi Challenges Professionals

Renowned architect and former president of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Olubukunola Ejiwunmi, has issued a passionate call to professionals in the built environment, urging them to adopt sustainable and inclusive practices that reflect both empathy and cultural awareness.

Speaking at the sixth edition of the NIA Distinguished Lecture Series held in Lagos, Ejiwunmi stressed that architecture must go beyond structures  it must be a force for unity, identity, and national integration.

In her powerful address titled “Harmony in Diversity,” she challenged architects to design not just with technical precision, but with a vision for social impact. She emphasized that true progress lies in embracing differences, amplifying underrepresented voices, and fusing regional identities into the nation’s architectural story. For her, sustainability is not just about materials or technology, but about designing with conviction, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility.

Ejiwunmi, the first female to lead the NIA, urged mentorship across generations, calling on the Institute to bridge the gaps between young professionals and veterans. She stressed the importance of policy advocacy, cultural sensitivity, and the bold use of local content and innovation. Architecture, she said, must be both smart and soulful  rooted in the people it serves.

Her call was echoed by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who, through his deputy Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, acknowledged the vital role architects play in shaping the city’s identity and development. He emphasized the need for synergy between professionals and government to build a Lagos that is not only beautiful and functional, but also inclusive and sustainable. The governor warned against unregulated development, insisting that collaboration is key to responsible urban growth.

NIA President, Mrs. Mobolaji Adeniyi, praised Ejiwunmi’s legacy, describing her as a visionary leader who championed mentorship, excellence, and innovation during her time as president. She also recalled Ejiwunmi’s significant role as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Housing during President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos, highlighting how her experiences in both public service and professional practice continue to shape the institute’s direction.

Also in attendance, the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Abdulwasiu Lawal, commended the NIA for its consistent support in shaping policies that have helped Lagos achieve critical milestones in infrastructure and urban development.

The lecture left attendees with a clear message: architecture must reflect the soul of a nation — diverse, resilient, and committed to building not just for today, but for generations to come.
