In a stirring call to action, past President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Arc. Olubukunola Ejiwunmi, has emphasized the crucial role of design professionals in championing sustainability and unity across Nigeria’s architectural landscape.
Speaking at the sixth edition of the Distinguished Lecture Series organized by NIA in Lagos, Ejiwunmi urged architects to go beyond aesthetics and materials, and instead focus on creating designs that foster harmony, cultural identity, and environmental responsibility. Her lecture, themed “Harmony in Diversity,” emphasized that architecture must be rooted in conviction and compassion, not just concrete and steel.
She advocated for a culture of mentorship, generational dialogue, and the inclusion of marginalized voices in the field, saying: “Architectural practice should reflect empathy, encourage collaboration, and prioritize cultural and environmental integrity. Harmony isn’t just an idea—it’s a deliberate pursuit that demands bold, purposeful design.”

Ejiwunmi also encouraged the NIA to enhance its relevance by bridging the gap between young and experienced professionals, promoting technological innovation, and strengthening regional integration in architectural discourse.
Adding to the discourse, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat commended architects for their contributions to Lagos’ development and called for stronger synergy between industry professionals and the state government. “We can’t continue to build without structure or planning. We need architects to help us reimagine Lagos into a city that is functional, beautiful, and inclusive,” he said.
NIA President Mobolaji Adeniyi praised Ejiwunmi’s tenure as one defined by commitment and transformation. She recalled the former president’s deep involvement in academic mentorship and her leadership as a former Permanent Secretary under then-Governor Bola Tinubu, now Nigeria’s President.
Oba Abdulwasiu Lawal, the Oniru of Iruland, also applauded the institute’s consistent support in shaping state development policies and urban strategies, noting that their input has significantly advanced Lagos’ growth trajectory.
The event reinforced the critical role of architecture in nation-building blending tradition with innovation, and sustainability with identity.
