Ikoyi Buildings Sealed as Lagos Moves Against Illegal Sewage Discharge
In a decisive move to protect public health and uphold environmental standards, the Lagos State Government has sealed off two buildings in the Ikoyi axis over unlawful discharge of untreated sewage into public drainage channels.
The enforcement, led by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), follows repeated violations and obstruction of official duties by property owners.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle that one of the properties, located at No. 2 Kebbi Street, Osborne Foreshore Estate, was sealed for deliberately discharging raw wastewater into public drains, a practice he described as both hazardous and unacceptable.
“Such acts pose a direct risk to human lives, contribute to environmental pollution, and are classified as public nuisances under state law,” Wahab said.
Another property, situated near Mambilla Estate Gate in the same neighborhood, was also sealed for denying LSWMO officials access, despite being served multiple inspection notices. Wahab confirmed that the obstruction violates the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
The commissioner warned that the government would no longer tolerate environmental infractions, particularly those endangering lives or degrading the urban ecosystem.
“All property owners must ensure proper sewage treatment and disposal. Those who violate these standards face strict penalties—including prosecution,” he said.
He also urged residents to adopt responsible sanitation practices and emphasized the government’s commitment to cleaner, safer, and healthier communities across Lagos.
This latest clampdown sends a strong message that the era of careless waste disposal and regulatory defiance in Lagos is over.
