In a heartfelt move to honour one of its most prominent sons, the Katsina State Government has declared Monday, July 14, 2025, as a work-free day to mourn the passing of former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday at the age of 83.
The announcement was made in an official statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba Faskari, on behalf of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda.
The state government explained that the work-free day is intended to allow residents, civil servants, and all citizens of Katsina to join in national mourning and offer prayers for the late president, who was born and raised in Daura, Katsina State. Governor Radda, in his message, described Buhari as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history an honest, principled, and patriotic elder statesman who dedicated his life to public service both as a military leader and a democratically elected president.
According to the statement, the governor extended deep condolences to Buhari’s immediate family, the people of Katsina, and the entire nation. He noted that Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria—particularly his unwavering commitment to fighting corruption, securing the country, and promoting agricultural development will be remembered for generations to come. Radda also praised Buhari’s humility, discipline, and steadfast belief in the unity and progress of Nigeria, calling him “a true son of the soil who served with integrity and honor.”
Prayers were offered for Allah’s mercy upon the late president’s soul, with wishes for his admittance into Aljannatul Firdaus. While the mood across the state is one of reflection and sorrow, the government emphasized that further details regarding the burial and memorial activities will be communicated in due time.
