The Federal Government has strengthened efforts to address Nigeria’s housing deficit through a new partnership with China focused on delivering affordable housing using modern construction technologies.
The initiative aims to accelerate housing development by adopting scalable, cost-efficient building solutions capable of meeting the country’s growing demand for homes.
The development follows a technical study tour to Guangzhou, China, led by Joseph Tegbe, Director-General and Global Liaison of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership.
The delegation also included executives from Family Homes Funds Limited, notably Managing Director Abdul Mutallab Mukhtar and Executive Director of Operations Emeka Henry Inegbu.
Focus on Modern Construction Methods
At the centre of discussions was the integration of modular and prefabricated housing technologies into Nigeria’s construction ecosystem.
These industrialised building methods are expected to significantly reduce construction costs, shorten project timelines, and improve quality at scale.
With Nigeria’s housing deficit running into millions of units, the government is increasingly turning to innovation and international collaboration to drive faster and more sustainable housing delivery.
Strengthening Partnerships and Financing
The engagement also explored collaboration with leading engineering, procurement, and construction firms to boost execution capacity for large-scale housing projects.
In addition, discussions were held with potential financing partners to mobilise long-term capital required to fund affordable housing initiatives, particularly for low- and middle-income earners.
According to officials, the meetings were facilitated by Joerno Conceptions Limited and E-Link Group, with support from Zou Gang of the China-Africa Economic and Trade Enterprises Working Committee.
Driving Sustainable Housing Solutions
Stakeholders say the partnership represents a shift towards results-driven bilateral cooperation, combining technical expertise, financing, and policy alignment to deliver measurable outcomes.
By leveraging China’s advanced construction capabilities, the initiative is expected to expand access to affordable housing while also creating jobs, strengthening local supply chains, and improving urban development outcomes.
The government maintains that adopting innovative construction models will be critical in closing Nigeria’s housing gap and delivering sustainable, inclusive housing solutions.
