The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has commissioned three major projects at Navy Town, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos, as part of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.
The projects are aimed at improving welfare, accommodation, and recreational facilities for naval personnel and enhancing operational effectiveness.
New Housing and Accommodation Projects
The commissioned facilities include:
- A 48-unit one-bedroom apartment block
- A 16-unit two-bedroom accommodation for Senior Ratings
- The Dolphin Golf Club House
The 48-unit apartment block was designed to address accommodation shortages within the Nigerian Navy, particularly in Lagos, and to provide improved living conditions for personnel.
Boost to Morale and Operational Efficiency
According to officials, the new housing units are expected to improve morale, productivity, and operational efficiency by providing a safer and more comfortable living environment for service members.
The project had been abandoned for about five years before Vice Admiral Idi Abbas directed its completion upon assuming office.
Construction resumed in March 2026 and was completed within approximately eight weeks following renewed planning and execution efforts.
Structural Design and Infrastructure Support
The housing facility was constructed using a cellular raft foundation system to ensure durability and long-term structural stability.
It also includes a dedicated water supply system with a treatment plant to provide clean and potable water for residents.
Dolphin Golf Club House for Recreation
The Dolphin Golf Club House is a two-storey recreational facility designed to promote relaxation and social interaction among military personnel and civilians.
It features:
- Reception area and general lounge
- VIP lounge, bar, and kitchen
- Male and female changing rooms
- Offices for club administration
- Upper terrace seating areas
- 600 square metres of interlocked parking space
- Landscaped green areas
Construction began in July 2025 and was initially scheduled for completion in July 2026, but was delivered two months ahead of schedule.
Senior Ratings’ Quarters Accommodation
The 16-unit two-bedroom accommodation for Senior Ratings includes modern residential flats designed to improve comfort and living standards for personnel and their families.
Supporting infrastructure includes:
- 2,000 square metres of interlocked roads and parking space
- 70,000 litres of water storage capacity
- Landscaped green areas for environmental improvement
Although the main building structure had been completed earlier, the absence of external works delayed occupation until recent interventions addressed accessibility and drainage challenges.
Navy Commitment to Welfare and Infrastructure Development
The Nigerian Navy said the projects reflect its commitment to improving personnel welfare, upgrading military infrastructure, and ensuring operational readiness.
The new developments are expected to strengthen morale within the force while enhancing the quality of life for officers and ratings stationed in Lagos.
