The Director-General of the Southeast Governors’ Forum and former Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife, has reiterated the necessity for ongoing government support for private developers in the real estate market.

Speaking at the commissioning of D’ Mayor’s Estates 2 and the Flag Off of Project Broadfield, Lady Ekwunife emphasized the crucial role of shelter and urged government intervention to alleviate the burden on private developers, particularly amidst the current high cost of building materials.

Addressing the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arch. Ahmed Dangiwa, present at the event, Ekwunife stressed the urgency of government intervention in assisting local developers, noting that grants and waivers are typically allocated to importers rather than domestic producers. She advocated for extending such incentives to local developers.

“There are so many ways to support businesses like this through access to facility. They need a lot of facility, now that all the materials are expensive… this is the time they need government intervention.

“We only give grants, waivers to importers, we usually don’t give grants, waivers, and all those incentives to the local people who give us comfort. Apart from air, the most important thing in the life of a human being is food and shelter. So the government must come in..all they need from us is to support them to continue to thrive in the world of business in Nigeria” she charged.

Highlighting the challenges faced by developers amidst the rising cost of building materials, Senator Ekwunife stressed the importance of government intervention in cushioning the effects of rising construction costs, asserting that such support is essential to ensure affordable housing options for all.
